Remote work rules and ethics

Remote work rules and ethics :

Below is a list of some remote work rules and ethics that systems and individuals should know and abide by.

First : Hardware :

Remote work companies might request some hardware from their employees like a suitable computer for the work needs and these requirements must be mentioned clearly in the ad.

And if the organization hands over any equipment outside the office to the remote employee, the employee is responsible for maintaining it.

Second : Time :

A company whose employees work remotely must provide a clear and accurate work schedule that specifies the different tasks, their times and deadlines for delivery, while the remote employee must be responsible, managing time effectively and give priority to meeting deadlines in the delivery of work or various tasks.

Third : Communication :

One of the biggest challenges that face remote employees, traditional work environments naturally provide spontaneous communication with co-workers and managers, which facilitates the communication process and makes it flexible and clear, while the virtual work environments sometimes create misunderstanding and many obstacles.

And All you have to do is the following:

  • Ensure effective communication with your colleagues and bosses who you work with remotely, through calling, e-mail, or working groups established on chat applications.
  • Be proactive and helpful.
  • Make your written communication language carry a part of your support and sympathy.

Fourth : Availability :

In remote work environments, companies must define a policy of availability during clearly defined hours and within a work schedule that specifies working days, and location, or leave their employees to schedule work hours in a way that suits them.

In all cases, availability during the specified working hours is something that you cannot ignore if you are a new worker in this field.

Fifth : Response :

The remote work systems must determine the type and time of response, and be clear in determining the expected time for the employee to respond immediately or not, because this will avoid managers and employees from wasting time resulting from delayed communication or response to follow up any emergency tasks.

Sixth : Measuring employee productivity :

Although a large number of companies tend to measure work results by the number of hours it takes, but according to some experts, trying to measure the productivity of the worker based on results is better and more effective than calculating time.

In all cases, remote work policies must determine how to measure employee productivity, whether it is through the number of tasks performed, positive responses from clients, or through the time the worker spends on completing a project.

Seventh: Security and Confidentiality:

Security and confidentiality standards in traditional work environments are taken for granted, and organizations work on it through accurate systems, but this system could be exposed to many risks and concerns once it moves outside the company’s walls.

That is why it is very necessary for business owners to clarify the details of security and confidentiality standards for their remote workers, such as:

  • Informing the employees to pay attention in case they are making a business call with a customer from a public café.
  • Inform the employee if the company does not want him to work on a public Wi-Fi

Eighth : Technical Support :

The general technology support policy in the institutions is clear and expected, but when working remotely, the company is expected to define in its policy the rules and ethics of work and what it expects from remote employees when facing technical problems such as internet outages, electricity, or the unavailability of access to some blocked sites and others.

The remote work style does not differ much from the traditional type of work, as it also presupposes a set of values and ethics that must be adhered to in order to achieve the desired human and professional goals.

Violating these rules and ethics is an unethical act, and it may have consequences that are harmful beyond our imagined limits.
